Job Description

The Ottawa Food Bank is a highly respected social service agency with a mission to collect and distribute food to its network of agency partners, who in turn serve clients in need throughout the city. Established in 1984 to fight community hunger, the Ottawa Food Bank has been serving the community’s most vulnerable people with respect and dignity, providing healthy, accessible, and sustainable food for all. We are currently recruiting a Conference Planning Assistant to join our team.


PARTNERSHIP WITH STUDENT SUMMER JOBS


The Ottawa Food Bank is partnering with Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) to provide quality opportunities for youth. CSJ is a program under the Youth Employment and Skills Strategy (YESS), which aims to provide flexible and holistic services to help youth in Canada develop the skills and gain paid work experience to successfully transition into the labour market. The CSJ program objectives align with YESS and are as follows:

  • Provide quality work experiences for youth;
  • Respond to national and local priorities to improve access to the labour market for youth who face unique barriers; and,
  • Provide opportunities for youth to develop and improve their skills.

The program works with employers from not-for-profit organizations, the public sector, and private sector organizations with 50 or fewer full-time employees, to create quality summer work experiences for young people aged 15 to 30 years. This is a fixed term opportunity, ending September 1, 2023.


POSITION SUMMARY


Reporting to the Program Development and Evaluation Coordinator, the Conference Planning Assistant will support the Programs and Planning team in planning and execution of logistics related to the 2023 Ottawa Food Security Conference.


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Correspond with potential speakers and presenters to coordinate their participation in the conference.
  • Execute logistical preparation for the event based on plans made by the conference planning committee.
  • Research and recommend options and opportunities to support the growth and improvement of the conference.
  • Support logistics and execution of professional development opportunities for the Ottawa Food Bank network before and after the conference (agency training plan).
  • Support and contribute to embedding inclusivity, equity, diversity, and accessibility in every level of the planning process.
  • Assist with development and execution of communication with Ottawa Food Bank network members and external stakeholders.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience and/or education in event planning or logistics.
  • Education and/or personal and/or professional experience in inclusivity, diversity, equity and accessibility issues; candidates who would like to contribute their expertise as someone who identifies as having lived/living experience of food insecurity to this role are encouraged to self-identify in their cover letter.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND TRAVEL


The Conference Planning Assistant works on-site at the Ottawa Food Bank. Duties are performed in an office environment. Travel is not required.


LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS


Fluency in English and French (spoken and written) is required. The ability to speak additional languages is an asset.


COMPENSATION


The rate for this position is $19.60 per hour, working a full-time, 35-hour work week.
