In partnership with Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated (NTl), OHRI is looking for an experienced Methodologist to join Dr. Gonzalo Alvarez's research group in support of the Qanuippitaa? National Inuit Health Survey (QNIHS) and the Taima TB research program.
NTI coordinates and manages Inuit responsibilities under the Nunavut Agreement and ensures that the federal and territorial governments fulfill their obligations. The management of land, water and wildlife is very important to the Inuit. NTI ensures that promises made under the Nunavut Agreement are carried out. Inuit exchanged Aboriginal title to all their traditional land in the Nunavut Settlement Area for the rights and benefits outlined in the Nunavut Agreement. NTI leads the QNIHS effort to establish a long-term, Inuit-determined research program for collecting information that informs decision-making, policies and programs and helps improve the health and wellness of Inuit in Nunavut and throughout Canada. The QNIHS will also build research capacity in Nunavut and support Inuit self-determination in research by ensuring that the survey meets the needs and priorities of Inuit in all Nunavut regions.
Dr. Alvarez, a Scientist in OHRI's Clinical Epidemiology Program and a Staff Respirologist within The Ottawa Hospital's Department of Medicine - Division of Respirology & Infections Disease, studies pulmonary health in disadvantaged populations, specifically among Canadian Inuit and in new Canadians. He has concentrated his efforts on pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) research in these populations. His Taima (means stop in Inuktitut) TB program is a group of research projects aimed at helping Inuit in Canada prevent the transmission of TB in their communities. He has recently completed several studies in Nunavut with funding from the Public Health Agency of Canada, the Canadian Institutes for Health Research, the Canadian High Arctic Research Station, and the Ontario Thoracic Society focused on the implementation of innovative screening, diagnostic and education tools in the remote communities of Nunavut.
The Methodologist, in partnership with the Nunavut Inuit Health Survey Steering Committee and the Nunavut Health Survey (NHS team) is responsible for supporting the development and implementation of the QNIHS in Nunavut by ensuring that the data will be useful and actionable. The incumbent is responsible for conducting statistical analyses of NHS data and ensuring that the NHS team has efficient/effective access to research results and will provide summaries and analytical products resulting from the survey. Additionally, the incumbent will provide methodological support to TAIMA TB as required.
Major Responsibilities:
Planning & Coordination
- Support the design and implementation of the QNIHS in Nunavut by working closely with NHS Managers, NHS Coordinator and the Nunavut Inuit Health Survey Steering Committee
- Maintain data systems
- Document and maintain the secure storage of NHS metadata and data
- Implement Quality Control and Quality Assessment of NHS and NHS-related data
- Conduct statistical analyses at the request of the NHS Team
- Provide statistical summaries and reports
- Participate as a team member on analytical aspects of research projects on the Nunavut Health Survey for Nunavut
- Collaborate with the NHS Data Manager on all aspects of the Health Survey pertaining to its Data
- Contribute to the implementation of the National Inuit Strategy on Research in Nunavut
Policy
- Implement policies, protocols, and guidelines relating to Data Management, access, and use
Communication and Research
- Communicate regularly with Research, Monitoring and Evaluation staff and other NTI departments, as required
- Assist the NHS and Communications teams in developing plain language summaries and visualizations for diverse audiences.
Other
- Represent NTI in meetings and conferences or on committees, working groups or other relevant networks, as required
Basic Requirements (Education/Experience):
- Undergraduate degree with a specialization in statistics, or a similar highly quantitative discipline (e.g., data sciences, health sciences, social sciences, etc.)
- Minimum of 2 years of experience analyzing statistical data sets and producing summary statistics and research reports
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in cleaning, manipulating, and analyzing datasets
- Solid understanding of developing documents/reports to support statistical and data analysis
- Proven ability to present highly complex methodological and statistical information to non-technical stakeholders through easy narratives
- Strong communication skills to prepare reports, presentations, briefing materials, and other documentation as needed
- Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Preferred Qualifications:
- Good knowledge and understanding of the Nunavut Agreement
- Sensitive to the local, political and cultural context in Nunavut
- Strong proficiency in the use of statistical tools, algorithms, models, and software (e.g., R, SPSS, SAS, STATA etc.) is an asset
- Strong understanding of legal, privacy and confidential requirements (policies, legislation and, sharing arrangements) surrounding data issues
- Strong knowledge of various data types, sampling methodologies, data systems and databases.
- Knowledge of data storage and metadata procedures
- Familiarity with ethics and research approaches, processes and methods as they apply to Inuit in Nunavut
- Spoken and written lnuktitut/lnnuinaqtun language is desirable, and a willingness to learn is preferred
- Priority will be given to Nunavut Inuit who self-identify as being enrolled under the Nunavut Agreement
Contract Details:
This is a 2-year full-time contract with the possibility of a renewal
Salary: Min:$32.004/hr - Max:$46.147/hr
