What:

Cowichan Green Community (CGC) is looking for a Kitchen Manager who will be responsible for overseeing kitchen operations and supervising staff in CGC’s commercial kitchens. This position will also assist with the community meal preparation. If you love managing people and supporting more vulnerable people including seniors, youth, and those who are struggling with homelessness, then this is the job for you.

In 2013 CGC purchased The Station, and the kitchen was used as a community kitchen where renters could utilize our new space. In 201 the kitchen was also contracted to make Meals on Wheels.

Since April 2021, Cowichan Green Community Foundation took on coordinating the Meals on Wheels program, which was previously run through Cowichan Seniors Foundation.

The kitchen now feeds various temporary shelters, and homeless youth seven days a week and will be taking on new contracts with various housing facilities.

When:

CGC is hiring immediately for a full time Kitchen Manager. Our kitchen is open from 9am to 5:30pm, seven days a week. Some weekend and evening work will be required.

Wage: $23.00/hour

Kitchen Management:

  • Ensure kitchen management and staff are enforcing strict adherence to all Island Health Authority Food Safety guidelines, recording, and reporting
  • Create and monitor the schedule for the daily, weekly, and monthly deep cleaning duties
  • Ensure the kitchen team completes all the cleaning following Island Health Authority guidelines
  • Work with the Manager to complete, submit, and track all Food Safety Plans as required
  • Ensure staff complete all equipment monitoring including the dishwasher sanitation and the freezer/cooler temperature logs
  • Schedule and oversee maintenance of kitchen equipment
  • Create the staffing and volunteer schedules
  • Order kitchen cleaning and dishwasher supplies
  • Track inventory of meals and food ingredients and organize weekly shopping
  • Coordinate online shopping and other ordering
  • Work with Marketing and Communications staff for marketing and promoting the products
  • Organize community events/meals
  • Plan and organizing catering
  • Oversee product pricing, portion control, and overall quality assurance
  • Complete monthly Board reports for the Executive Director including all kitchen revenues by the first Friday of each month
  • Attend staff meetings as required and provide kitchen updates

Kitchen Duties:

  • Receive recovered food, help sort, and process and/or prepare into meals for sale in the store
  • Create weekly Meals on Wheels and community meal menus
  • Prepare value-added products with recovered food
  • Develop additional value-added recipes including frozen meals
  • Design and complete product labeling
  • Co-ordinate with the reFRESH Marketplace Manager for pricing and inventory of the food and meals
  • Liaise with Meals on Wheels drivers and MoW program coodinator

Staffing:

  • Supervise the Kitchen Supervisor(s) and ensure other kitchen staff are managed appropriately
  • Coordinate and supervise volunteers
  • Complete timesheets and ensure all hours are logged correctly
  • Ensure all staff are logging in/out using Slack
  • Ensure all staff take daily scheduled 30 minute breaks
  • Complete all staff 30/60/90 day performance reviews and conduct weekly staff meetings and one on ones as required

Finance:

  • Assist with managing the kitchen budget including tracking:
  • expenditure tracking for all kitchen related expenses
  • preparing quotes for catering
  • tracking costs of meals
  • monthly invoicing for Meals on Wheels and catering

Other Duties:

  • Assist with the planning and development of other CGC commercial kitchen initiatives

Working Conditions:

  • This position will work primarily in a kitchen environment

Experience and Skills:

The ideal candidate has:

· Strong communication skills to effectively interact with the Kitchen Manager, other staff, participants, volunteers, and community members

· Versatile food skills and knowledge including meal prep, cooking, preserving, processing, and baking and a certificate/diploma in food skills is an asset.

· Workable knowledge of Word, Excel, Zoom, and the Internet.

· Two or more years’ experience at a community non-profit organization is an asset
