Your Opportunity:

This position involves duties in the technical area of the RGH Laboratory. Collects and processes a variety of specimens in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures; this may include but is not limited to, performing MLA tasks in Anatomic Pathology. Handles, stores, transports, and disposes of biological and other hazardous materials according to guidelines. Verifies and enters patient and specimen information into the LIS and/or log sheets. Performs limited testing procedures such as urinalysis and rapid Flu/Covid testing. Prioritizes the processing and testing of specimens. Operates, maintains, and performs troubleshooting on a variety of laboratory instruments and equipment. Performs quality control and quality assurance activities, calibrates instruments and maintains records as appropriate to their scope of work. Duties may also include blood product inventory reconciliation and ordering, computer data entry, shipping and receiving specimens/blood products, and answering phone calls. Follows safety procedures and policies and identifies/reports unsafe conditions. Maintains a clean, safe and organized work area. Recognizes and assesses unusual or abnormal findings; escalates problems, issues, and occurrences as required and documents appropriately. Identifies opportunities for safer practices and workflow improvement and applies process improvement principles to support changes. Provides reception, answers inquiries, and responds to requests for information. Escalates requests or inquiries as required. Performs administrative duties such as filing, faxing, reports distribution, and archiving when required. Documents and participates in the training and orientation of students and staff. Monitors, orders, rotates, distributes and stores supplies as applicable. Performs other related duties as assigned.

As a Medical Laboratory Assistant I, you will provide high quality service to clients of the clinical laboratory in an effective, efficient and safe manner. You will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions including procurement, handling, processing, dispatching and testing of specimens, performing procedures and reporting results.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Medical Laboratory Assistant certificate from an educational institute within Canada satisfactory to APL or MLA certification through CSMLS. Proficiency in data entry. Recent experience within the last year in an Urban or hospital RRL setting. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite programs. Working knowledge of Connect Care. Any Canadian equivalency to English 30 or 33 or CLBA score of Benchmark 8 completed within the last six months.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting laboratory instruments and equipment. Experience in technical lab. Working knowledge of Flu/Covid testing will be considered an asset. Courses/certificates in personal leadership development. Courses/training in process improvement or change management. Ability to work in a multi-disciplined/skilled environment with minimal supervision.
