EDC is seeking a seasoned investment professional with demonstrated leadership competencies to join our Investments Team. We are an evergreen investment group with over $3 billion in committed and invested capital that invests independently or in partnership with other investors under commercial terms, conditions and return expectations. We focus on direct minority investments in Canadian companies, and also support select Canadian private equity and venture funds focused on the mid-market and strategic spaces such as the Clean-Tech sector and BIPOC-led companies. We are long-term investors that offer tailored growth capital solutions, and leverage EDC’s full value proposition of financial solutions, networks, and knowledge for the benefit of Canadian companies in order to accelerate their international growth.



The successful candidate will have 10+ years of dedicated experience in private equity or venture capital and accordingly will have: i) a deep network within the Canadian equity capital ecosystem, ii) direct hands-on experience in transaction execution and portfolio management to provide oversight and mentorship to team members; and iii) a solid knowledge of the asset class, its participants, and practices.

The successful candidate will be one of three leaders on the Investments Team, together responsible for ~ 25 dedicated investment professionals with team and individual targets aligned to deliver on EDC’s Vision for Canada. The Investments Team is paired with the Mid-Market Lending team to form the Mid-Market Capital Group, reporting up to the VP, Investments & Mid-Market Lending.

Key Responsibilities

  • Performance Management - Oversees the performance and career development of the team to ensure the required capacity and capability to meet organizational goals while being a role model for the culture of EDC. Leverages experience to provide learning, development, and mentorship to colleagues
  • Deliver on customer success through EDC’s product offering, business advice and the team’s involvement in value creation for customers
  • Originate and/or triage potential investment opportunities for the Team. Assess fit with EDC investment criteria, assign and support the deal team in formulating the investment thesis and structure
  • Support deal teams with transaction diligence – direct deal teams on the appropriate structure, business analysis, diligence, and negotiation against the complexity of partnered, direct, and/or fund transactions
  • Present to Investment Committee – responsible for the deal teams’ preparation of investment memorandums and related materials and presents to EDC’s Investment Committee
  • Build a sustainable portfolio – builds and oversees the management of a diverse portfolio of investment assets. Ensures their team’s ongoing assessment and valuation of individual investments which includes maintaining relationships with senior management of portfolio investments to provide or coordinate value added support to their growth strategies
  • Demonstrate Teamwork - Works collaboratively and effectively with EDC customers and all internal and external stakeholders

Skills & Knowledge

  • Leadership skills via formal or informal roles to inspire a team with a strong customer orientation and high levels of performance
  • Solid understanding of finance and accounting enabling effective financial analysis
  • Strong communication, collaboration and teamwork skills
  • Good business acumen coupled with above average customer focus
  • Ability to understand complex legal contracts
  • Solid organizational skills to effectively manage an active pipeline, portfolio performance, and team performance while conforming to internal policies, guidelines, and processes.
  • Ability to operate independently and represent EDC with company founders, senior executives, general partners and other investors in the Canadian private equity ecosystem

Screening Criteria

  • Minimum 10 years of private equity, corporate or venture capital investing, with a demonstrated track record of leading transactions and managing a portfolio of investments
  • Referenceable deal sheet or listing of relevant private equity or venture capital transactions that the candidate had direct (individual or shared) involvement in
  • Masters of Business Administration or relevant experience
  • Experience in board seat representation and ongoing assessment and valuation of investee companies and regular governance/financial investor context engagement with investee companies’ C-Suite and other board members
  • Verifiable and active industry network (pension funds, private equity, family offices, etc.) relevant to the execution on the team’s mandate
  • Bilingual in both official languages (French and English)*

Assets

  • Experience with private company boards and governance
  • Operational experience in a private equity or venture backed company
  • CFA, CPA, or similar designation
