About the Opportunity

Reporting to the Pharmacy Manager, the Pharmacy Practice Assistant participates in the provision of safe, competent, patient or family centered ethical care, ensuring the goals and needs of the patient are prioritized and individualized. The Pharmacy Practice Assistant prepares, packages, and dispenses medication under the direct supervision of a pharmacist. Responsibilities include packaging of sterile and non-sterile dosage forms, dispensing drugs to inpatients and outpatients in unit dose, traditional and CIVA systems, compounding sterile and non-sterile products, preparation of chemotherapy doses, distributing narcotics and participating in quality programs.

About You

We would love to hear from you if you have the following:

  • Grade XII plus completion of a recognized Pharmacy Technician/Technology Program (accredited program preferred) OR one-year full-time experience as a hospital pharmacy technician OR two years’ experience as a community pharmacy technician
  • Licensure in Nova Scotia as a Pharmacy Technician (NSCP) is an asset
  • Two years’ experience as a pharmacy technician/pharmacy practice assistant, preferably in a hospital, an asset
  • Knowledge of sterile technique and special precautions used with chemotherapy are an asset
  • Experience in unit dose drug distribution systems, automation technology, decentralized medication dispensing cabinets, an asset
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, inventory control and record keeping
  • Demonstrated ability to perform mathematical calculations related to medications
  • Knowledge of the law and regulations pertaining to the receipt, storage and distribution of prescription and narcotic drugs
  • Basic typing skills or computer/keyboard experience; skills in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred

Compensation and Incentives

$23.07 - $26.14 Hourly
