The Opportunity

Reporting to the Director of Pharmacy, the Pharmacy Operations Manager is responsible for the safe, effective and efficient provision of drug distribution services, including oversight of pharmacy systems, both automated and manual. The manager works collaboratively with the pharmacy operations team to ensure that the compounding, preparation and delivery of medications meets high standards for quality and patient safety. In addition, the manager oversees drug procurement and inventory management, pharmacy practice assistant competency assessment and certification and health technology assessment (drug distribution systems). The manager oversees the selection, training and evaluation of pharmacy practice assistants and technician students with respect to expected performance and competencies and supports the operational, fiscal and strategic objectives of the Pharmacy Department. As well, they are responsible to ensure that all processes, programs and initiatives are consistent with the vision, mission and values of the IWK.

Hours of Work

Monday through Friday, 75 hours bi-weekly.

Your Qualifications

  • Registered Pharmacy Technician and licensed with the Nova Scotia College of Pharmacists required.
  • 5 years experience in a hospital pharmacy setting required.
  • Previous manager or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Completion of a management training program is an asset.
  • Must have an excellent knowledge of current hospital pharmacy practices and technologies, as well as trends including computerized unit dose and traditional drug distribution systems, decentralized dispensing cabinets, unit dose packaging equipment as well as awareness and aptitude for intravenous admixture/total parenteral nutrition and chemotherapy preparation systems including laminar air flow and biohazard cabinets and related sterile supplies; Narcotic and controlled drugs, legal acts and regulations governing the profession of Pharmacy in the Province of Nova Scotia, and the standards set forth by the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists, Accreditation Canada and other applicable standards pertaining to drug distribution services.
  • Experience with LEAN work flow analysis and review is an asset.
  • Experience with Failure Mode Effects and Analysis review (quality review) is an asset.
  • Must possess strong planning, evaluative and leadership skills; have demonstrated fiscal management skills, strong time management skills; and strong knowledge of healthcare issues and collective agreements.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills in decision-making, problem-solving and motivation.
  • Ability to prioritize and work under the pressure of time limitations
  • Excellent interpersonal communication, collaborative and negotiation skills
  • Ability to advance and maintain effective working relationships within Pharmacy and with interdisciplinary healthcare teams throughout the IWK.
  • Knowledge and experience in all aspects of drug distribution
  • Proficient with computers and office administration programs, specifically MS Office (Word, Excel, Power point, Internet Explorer and Outlook, Sharepoint, Skype, Zoom Healthcare. Experience with SAP and departmental pharmacy software preferred.
  • Knowledge of and experience with change management principles and methodologies.
  • Competencies in other languages are an asset.
