Job Description

We are presently recruiting for a Principal, Strategic Credit (SC) in our Capital Solutions group within the Credit Investment department, to be based in Toronto. SC invests in sub-investment grade structured credit, debt capital solutions for financial institutions, life science & IP investments, and special situations in markets across the Americas. The Principal will focus on our structured credit and financials portfolio. Typical investments include purchasing or financing whole loan portfolios, acquiring junior tranches or residuals in ABS securitizations, or providing strategic financing solutions to financial institutions in the Americas.

Reporting to the Managing Director, Strategic Credit, you will play a deal-lead and portfolio management role and work closely with the Managing Director to shape and execute the long-term strategy and direction of the team. Working with our global colleagues across CPP Investments, you will leverage your deep network of market contacts to source, structure, negotiate and lead due diligence in structured credit, specialty finance corporate credit, and other related credit transactions, primarily in the Americas. Utilizing your significant investment acumen and track record you will lead deal teams by offering mentorship and guidance to junior team members and provide oversight on sophisticated pricing and valuation models. You will drive investment committee discussions, providing thoughtful and balanced perspectives to build the SC portfolio and contribute to the Group and Global Credit Investments department strategic objectives.

Credit Investments currently manages assets in excess of $50B; investment size ranges from $50M to over $1B. The Credit Investments team has over 120 investment professionals across North America, Europe, and Asia.

Role-Specific Accountabilities:

Source attractive deals and build a distinctive market edge for Strategic Credit

  • Use your already established network of relationships with management, sponsors and intermediaries across the financials and structured credit industry to source new investment opportunities for the group
  • Actively work to craft new opportunities rather than relying on inbound requests
  • Be immediately recognized as a thought and execution leader in the structured credit vertical. Gain visibility by taking dedicated outreach steps (e.g., non-transactional meetings with management teams, participating at conferences)
  • Successfully position CPP Investments as the partner of choice

Lead deal teams as they execute transactions, maintaining clear oversight of deals and key relationships

  • Demonstrate a talent for apprenticing junior team members as they execute transactions. Perpetuate a group culture of constant mentorship, improvement, and excellence
  • Articulate investment themes in the structured credit vertical and shape the theses on deals. Identify critical factors impacting potential returns.
  • Demonstrate good judgment on deal actionability and deploy resources efficiently.
  • Lead the team on execution priorities and workplan that balances robust analytics with efficiency in pursuing high probability outcomes
  • Think critically about risk assessment and how to diligence issues; actively identify and handle risks on investments.
  • Be creative and prudent in negotiating and structuring deals to achieve investment objectives while also providing downside protection on key risks
  • Establish strong rapport with management teams
  • Identify and remove roadblocks before they become an issue.
  • Champion attractive deals with conviction and competence at CI, CPP Investments management and Board Investment Committees

Perpetuate a culture of high-performance, integrity and partnership within CSG and with the organization.

  • Be an enterprise standard bearer of CPP Investments’ Guiding Principles.
  • Be a collaborative teammate who engages their colleagues.
  • Be flexible, adaptable and take initiative.
  • Encourage and incorporate multiple perspectives in decision making.
  • Entrepreneurial, driven, and willing to work hard to achieve objectives.
  • Comfortable engaging others with impact in a high-profile environment and high-visibility role.
  • Keen to build a sustainable business
  • Seek opportunities for innovation, to drive efficiencies in investment processes and to find opportunities for data driven edge.
  • Assist in the training and development of Credit Investments department colleagues and participate in recruiting activities to build a diverse and inclusive team.

Qualifications

If you possess the following, we’d like to hear from you:

  • Knowledgeable in at least a few of the following areas: structured credit, specialty finance, asset backed finance, whole loans, and other financials related credit opportunities.

  • Professional with a consistent track record originating, structuring, and executing private transactions.
  • Thorough understanding of modeling, analytical and valuation approaches in order to provide oversight and mentoring to junior investment professionals.
