Position Description:

The Professor, Culinary is responsible for providing academic leadership and for developing an effective, learning-centered environment for students through the design and delivery of curriculum within the Chef School at George Brown College. Teaching courses in all years of the culinary certificate, and diploma programs as well as pre-apprentice and apprentice culinary courses in other programs within the Chef School. The professor will teach courses to students in all years at the certificate, and diploma level.

Education / Certification / Designation:

  • The successful candidate requires Interprovincial Red Seal Cook II or Chef designation.
  • Degree in a related field or adult education is an asset.
  • Must have a minimum of three (3) years teaching experience in adult learning combined with demonstrated effective coaching / leadership skills and significant on-the-job skills training.
  • Sound knowledge of modern culinary skills and techniques, cost management and food theory principles, along with a demonstrated track record in the utilization of both traditional and new approaches to classical techniques.
  • Member in good standing with a professional regulatory body an asset, i.e., Canadian Culinary Federation.

Experience:

  • Knowledge and familiarity with innovative teaching delivery methods required.
  • Proficiency with industry-specific equipment and technology is required.
  • Prior post-secondary teaching training and experience in adult instructions techniques, and curriculum design experience will be preferred and will be applied in a variety of teaching and learning settings.


Knowledge / Skills Set:


A thorough knowledge of current trends in UDL and DEI practice, with proven ability to teach the entry-level practitioner in the classroom and lab setting will be required. Academic leadership experience in a post-secondary program is an asset.


  • Must have experience with advanced learning technologies, including online delivery.
  • Involvement in innovation and professional development related to teaching, use of technology, and student success.
  • Minimum ten (10) years progressive experience, with 3-5 years at a management level, in culinary industry.
  • Ability to convey conceptual and practical aspects of subjects to students respecting their diverse backgrounds, experience and learning needs.
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and life-long learning.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, teamwork, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to uphold the College’s priorities on diversity and equity.
  • Previous curriculum development and formal post-secondary teaching experience would be considered assets.
  • Competition experience at a provincial and or national level will be considered an asset.

Candidates seeking full-time faculty positions with the College must demonstrate the ability to design, facilitate and assess learning in accordance with adult learning principles and Universal Design for Learning (UDL).


Interview process will consist of a mock teaching experience and, in some cases, a practical skills component.
