Role Overview

We are seeking a dynamic and innovative self employed Psychiatrist who will work enthusiastically to deliver recovery oriented, client and family centered and comprehensive services that meet client needs, ensure client safety and work within a quality improvement framework to identify opportunities for enhancing quality and quantitative outcomes of the services. Client and family centered care is guiding principle at Cota that helps improve decision making processes, health outcome and client experiences. The self employed Assertive Housing First Team (AHFT) Psychiatrist will embed this guiding principle into their work.

About the Team

AHFT East is targeted to individuals 18+ years of age. 50% of AHFT clients are living with complex mental health challenges and are homeless at intake; and 50% are living with complex mental health challenges, are homeless at intake, and have justice involvement (referred through court support programs and/or local correctional facilities). AHFT utilizes an interdisciplinary and Housing First approach to support individuals to live well in their community.

Summary of Duties:

The self employed Psychiatrist shall:

  • Be an experienced, compassionate, positive and innovative team player on the AHFT Team
  • Work with clients 18 years of age and older who are experiencing significant difficulties as a result of serious and persistent mental illness, and may also be struggling with addictions
  • Work collaboratively with clients and the AHFT team to provide treatment, rehabilitation and support to clients
  • Provide psychiatric/medical evaluation, diagnosis and medication management services in an outpatient clinical setting and the community as required
  • Conduct clinical assessments for program eligibility in conjunction with AHFT and support this interdisciplinary team (comprised of a manager, nurses, case managers, peer support worker, program assistant and housing coordinator).
  • Demonstrate sound clinical skills as required to support the needs of AHFT clients
  • Ensure accurate and timely documentation and data entry
  • Be available to work 2-3 weekdays/week, attending the AHFT daily team meeting (9am-10am) on those days, followed by client appointments
  • Undertake other duties as required and within the scope of practice

Summary of Qualifications:

The self employed Psychiatrist shall be:

  • Certified by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) or has comparable qualifications with a specialty certification in adult psychiatry or an equivalent designation
  • Minimum of 2-years practicing as a psychiatric physician working with adults with serious mental health and/or mental health and addictions issues
  • Maintain 3-4 hours of availability throughout the week for consultation as needed
  • Experienced or have knowledge of working with people who are homeless, struggling with addictions and potentially involved in the mental health and justice system
  • Working knowledge with the Ontario Mental Health Act and Mental Health Reform
  • Knowledge of Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Recovery as guiding principles for assessing and developing treatment plans for clients
  • Excellent clinical mental health assessment and interview skills
  • Knowledge of psychotropic medications, especially the newer neuroleptics, and their intended effects and possible side effects
  • Ability to dispense and inject neuroleptics as require
  • Ability to share information with clients and families about medications, symptoms, side effects and health and wellness behaviours
  • Knowledge of trends, issues related to the delivery of services to a mental health client population
  • Excellent knowledge of community resources available to people living with mental illnesses/addiction challenges
  • Excellent diplomacy and conflict resolution skills
  • Excellent computer skills (e.g., Word, Excel, Microsoft Outlook)
