Job Description

The Director, Real Estate Environmental Sustainability leads the delivery of the Real Estate strategies focused on achieving Canada Post’s sustainability targets. This highly visible role will lead the GHG and waste diversion strategies for the Corporation, which will be regularly analyzed and reported on to the Board of Directors. This Director will collaborate closely with the Corporate Sustainability and Environmental Policy team and other groups at Canada Post and is responsible to drive the implementation of Real Estate programs that fall under the ESG mandate. The Director will lead a team of professionals who develop and implement sustainability programs for the owned and leased property portfolio.

Job Responsibilities


Below are the main job requirements and responsibilities for the Director, Real Estate Environmental Sustainability.


  • Leads the development of a proactive strategy and program to ensure Canada Post achieves its sustainability targets. Implements and adjusts initiatives at Canada Post buildings based on performance.
  • Identifies, develops and leads strategic companywide Real Estate projects and initiatives. Accountable to implement the program on budget and on schedule. Coordinates effective communications and change management plans with bargaining units, employees and other stakeholders to drive successful project implementation.
  • Contributes to large cross-functional working groups including external vendors, Operations, Bargaining Units, and Finance ensuring alignment and consistency in the delivery of Canada Post’s strategy for environmental sustainability and social responsibility.
  • Investigates and implements Power Purchase Agreements or other programs to increase the Corporation’s use of renewable energy.
  • Establishes a measurement and verification program to assess project results against benchmarks. Oversee the tracking of environmental and sustainability data to ensure accurate reporting.
  • Advocates and implements sustainability goals, policies, practices and procedures within Canada Post Real Estate function and promote the adoption of best practices. Revises existing processes to ensure environment and sustainability considerations are part of Real Estate investments and everyday Real Estate decisions.

  • Identify standard environmental or sustainability design items to be included in proto-typical building designs.
  • Prepares reports, presentations, briefing notes, dashboards, predictive models and business cases for senior management, the ESG Steering Committee and the Board of Directors.
  • Keep abreast of industry best practices and innovations around Real Estate climate change solutions, renewable energy, sustainable building design construction and operation, responsible sourcing, circular economy, zero waste and ESG reporting. Researches and investigates industry trends; identifies and analyses risks and opportunities for the Real Estate program.
  • Leads a team of professionals, engaging them and enabling them to optimize their role and contribution to the business; provides opportunities for professional development.
  • Conducts business in a manner that reflects Corporate Values and Leadership Behaviours and Habits. Fosters meaningful relationships, founded in trust, respect and mutual understanding aligned with the mandate that the government, the Minister and the Chair of the Board have articulated to the Corporation.

Qualifications

Education
  • Completed post-secondary degree, preferably in Environmental Sciences, Sustainability, Architecture, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering OR a combination of equivalent professional experience and training

Experience

  • 5 to 7 years of experience implementing sustainability programs across a portfolio of buildings
  • 3 or more years’ experience managing people
  • One or more years of experience in a large and complex organization
