Job Description
The Operation Systems team is looking for an engineer or analyst to join our team who is responsible for the support and management of the Energy Management Systems (EMS) portfolio. The SCADA Engineer/Analyst will be an integral part of the Operations Systems Data Management team in supporting the real time operations of the Alberta Electrical Grid.
Key Accountabilities:
  • Design, configure, test, implement, document, troubleshoot, and maintain systems supporting real-time control systems environment, including system hardware, communications, telemetry, and operating system software.
  • Optimize system control and monitoring applications specific to project design and operating requirements.
  • Support implementation of transmission and generation projects:
    • Review technical documents, standards, and single-line diagrams to develop SCADA requirements for the AESO’s power system model.
    • Work with internal and external personnel to implement, test, and validate data
    • Understand project process and methodologies
  • Manage baseline EMS functionality and provide 7 x 24 on-call support for real-time operations, including incident and problem management related to:
    • SCADA data configuration and quality
    • SCADA Wide Area Network (WAN) and telecommunications links
    • Support of protocols including DNP3 and ICCP
    • Support and operation of Automatic Generation Control
  • Support and manage North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP)/Security compliance of the EMS
  • Support key internal business users of EMS data and perform technical data analysis
  • Provide project input, testing, validation, and support of key initiatives and growth of EMS applications.
  • Develop and implement automated methods for system updates and security tasks.
  • Interface with IT team for incident/problem management, monitoring service level expectations and agreements, and joint project implementation and support
  • Where applicable, support of advanced applications such as power system network model tuning, operator training simulators, voltage and transient stability analysis, wide-area situational awareness tools.

Education & Experience to support your success in this role:
  • Undergraduate Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 3 to 5 years of experience in Power Systems related discipline.
  • 2 or more years of experience in Energy Management System preferred.
  • In-depth knowledge of complex control systems applications used in a real-time operating environment and excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Understanding power system network modeling and able to demonstrate working knowledge of GE EMS software, and/or have experience with advanced application systems.
  • Power Systems engineering and electric utility experience and familiarity with the operation of the AESO power market is considered an asset.
  • Experience supporting the SCADA systems, with a working knowledge of telecommunications and network infrastructure. Direct experience with GE EMS products will be an asset.
  • Understanding of Remedial Action Schemes (RAS) is also an asset
Note - The worksite for this role requires the ability to travel to a location in NW Calgary that is not accessible by public transit.
