Reporting to the Director Engineering – Transportation, this position performs professional Engineering work for the safe and efficient movement of people and goods within the City encompassing all modes of transport. This position is also responsible for coordinating the implementation of new and replacement traffic infrastructure and assists with the development and maintenance of an asset management plan.

The Senior Transportation Engineer develops, reviews, monitors and manages traffic management and transportation engineering projects, work plans and programs. Conducts traffic safety studies and reviews including: planning and organizing traffic data collection, assessing collision analysis, undertaking intersection or corridor assessments, and retaining and managing engineering consultants as required. Prepares Council/Committee reports and makes recommendations for improvements. Provides traffic engineering expertise regarding day to day operations and maintenance of all traffic control devices including the traffic signal system, signage and pavement markings, and streetlighting. Manages street activities (e.g. temporary road closures), construction traffic management, traffic signals and street lighting. Serves as a representative of the Transportation Division with third party and development projects, defining transportation infrastructure requirements and traffic management permitting process. Provides instruction and leads a team of traffic technicians. Monitors capital and operating budgets. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications include completion of a University Degree in Civil and/or Transportation Engineering or a related field; Registration as a Professional Engineer and Member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (APEGBC). 10 years of related Transportation Engineering and supervisory experience. Thorough knowledge of traffic and transportation infrastructure, management, systems, standards, safety, policies, materials, practices, guidelines, operations and equipment. Advanced computer skills including: Microsoft Excel, Word, Synchro, and Vissim. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; and work independently and within a team environment. Ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively with a variety of internal and external stakeholders and clients. Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia is required.
