Role and Responsibilities


Flight Simulator Technician

As part of the Technical Services department within CAE’s Civil Training and Services division, the candidate will work on shifts varying from 6 (six) to 10 (ten) consecutive hours 24-38 hours weekly – on various differing shifts including day, evening, night and weekend shifts.

The incumbent will support the following roles and responsibilities:

Training Center - Simulator Software Technician -Perform all levels of software and / or hardware troubleshooting; utilizing established engineering standards, to support training device modification requirements. -Requires the application of an engineering mindset to properly, accurately and effectively diagnose and troubleshoot simulator issues. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: Resolves customer training snags that render the device unusable or has a direct negative impact on the execution of training objectives in an in-service flight training device within a flight training center environment. Identify the need and assess the requirements for modifications to the training device software and or hardware to enhance realism or correct discrepancies. Document operational, maintenance, and troubleshooting procedures.

Entry professional level - Incumbent in this role learns to use professional concepts. Is typically receiving guidance and direction from more experienced colleagues. Provides support to more experienced professionals from his/her area of activity. Position requires professional degree in a single discipline with typically 0-3 years of related experience.

Technical projects: (50%)

  • Desktop application programming
  • User Interface design and ePodium configuration
  • Software troubleshooting
  • Dashboard maintenance
  • Configuration Management, Linux/Unix

Technical operational support: (40%)

  • Preparation of the simulator for customer training and running pre-flight tests
  • Performing preventive maintenance tasks,and performing and restoring system/computer disk backups
  • Diagnosis and resolving of complex deficiencies that require additional data or research into aeroplane fundamental characteristics and behaviours
  • Identifying and replacing defective flight simulator components
  • Validating various snag fixes directly on the flight simulator device
  • Working in a C/Unix, Windows-based, and Matrix X environment to step through numerous lines/modules of codes in order to pinpoint root-cause of problems
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical and electro-mechanical drawings and design documents
  • Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Optional aircraft/systems experience to apply hands-on fixes to an aviation simulator.

Administrative duties and documentation : (10%)

  • Logging work on a regular, objective and formal basis in training system information system (Gemini)
  • Update technical documentation and procedures
  • Participating and actively learning in technical training courses and on-the-job learning opportunities
  • Various projects to be assigned in order to ensure smooth operation of the center

Requirements

  • Software Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent.
  • Related experience in software and electronic modification and manipulation.
  • Knowledge of Windows, Unix, C, C++ programming languages and scripting languages an asset.
  • Interest and understanding in the relationship between technical hardware and software interaction as it relates to aviation simulation
  • Familiarization with basic electronic theory and principles and electronic testing equipment.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills
