We are looking for a high-performance computing (HPC) and application optimization technical advisor to be a member of our Research Platform Support team. The advisor would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

This position will be a member of our Research Platform Support team responsible for supporting NRC’s users on local and cloud HPC systems. The candidate will be responsible in supporting users on HPC systems above the operating system layer (e.g.: applications, container images, job scheduler). The successful candidate will also be responsible for maintaining and completing technical documentation of the services.

Education

A University degree or college diploma in a field related to the position, such as (but not limited to) Computer Science or Computer Engineering.

Experience

  • Recent and significant experience supporting Linux HPC users for CPU (central processing unit) and GPU (graphics processing unit) (e.g. Nvidia V100) jobs submitted to a SGE or Slurm scheduler;
  • Recent and significant experience with GNU and Intel compiler suites, Python and Linux shells (e.g.: Bash, C) scripting;
  • Recent and significant experience in containerization technologies such as Docker and Apptainer;
  • Significant experience providing computing support, analyzing, troubleshooting, and resolving complex application problems (e.g.: code compilation and runtime issue resolution);
  • Significant experience in creating and updating technical documentation;
  • Experience working as a team and collaborating with members of other teams.
  • Significant is defined as 2 to 5 years of experience.
  • Recent is defined as within the last five years.

A Secret clearance must be obtained within 12 months of employment.

Assessment Criteria

Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:

Technical Competencies

  • Knowledge of shell scripting (e.g. Bash and/or C)
  • Knowledge of GNU and Intel compiler suites
  • Knowledge of Slurm and SGE schedulers
  • Knowledge of Docker and Apptainer container technologies
  • Knowledge of Red Hat and Ubuntu Linux distributions.
  • Ability to apply basic project management practices and principles to challenges and situations.

Assets:

  • Experience supporting scientific applications, languages and environments (e.g. CRAN-R, Ansys, OpenFOAM, Cobalt, etc);
  • Experience with cloud computing platforms (e.g.: Azure, AWS);
  • Experience with Azure container registry, Azure container instances, Azure Kubernetes Services (AKS) and Azure Batch Shipyard;
  • Strong customer service skills;
  • Experience with multiple scripting languages.

Relocation

Relocation assistance will be determined in accordance with the NRC's directives.

Compensation

From $89,548 to $112,660 per annum.

An incumbent occupying a position within the CS Group is currently entitled to receive a terminable allowance of $212 per month.
