Role

Reporting to the GIS Supervisor, the GIS Technologist supports efficient planning, design, construction, rehabilitation, operation, and maintenance of the transportation network through data collection activities and upkeep of the spatial information management system.


The position provides the technical expertise to compile data collection programs, liaises with data collection vendors to ensure project requirements are understood, and monitors and evaluates the performance of vendors and engineering consultants. This position is also responsible for documenting vendor progress on an integrated data collection contract or through a standalone contract and maintaining day-to-day project communications.


The main responsibilities for the GIS Technologist are (but not limited to):

  • Actively collecting, reviewing, validating and managing datasets that support the transformation to digital government through the provision of reliable data about the transportation network
  • Administering contracts for field data collection programs
  • Providing quality assurance through formal review of care, problem identification, corrective actions to remedy any deficiencies and evaluation of actions taken
  • Supporting and updating the geographic information system through entering planning, design and as-built information from planning and construction projects
  • Research and monitor technological changes in data collection technologies to discover methods that will optimize department resources and reduce red tape processes
  • Identify, initiate and prioritize information system products as well as work-flows within the scope of work

Qualifications


Required:
Diploma in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or related, supplemented by 2 years of experience in transportation related Geographic Information Systems or similar work


Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.


Assets:

  • Experience managing projects for effective delivery of data products
  • Perform data centered techniques and work with information systems that fulfill business requirements
  • Expertise and knowledge transfer in the area of data collection methods as well as upkeep of the Geographic Information System
