Job Description

Sparkjoy Studios is a web agency specializing in the design and build of custom websites and web applications that work with WordPress as a CMS.

We are a small group of people working in a positive, creative, and interesting workplace environment. Everyone enjoys a high degree of autonomy and flexibility -- each person is largely self-directed when it comes to getting work done. Our clients are businesses and institutions in Canada and internationally with large custom designed websites usually with a web application and interactive features. Every project is unique, our efforts are creative and there are always new and challenging opportunities in our work. Our clients respect our opinion and look to us to be experts and advise them on how to use these technologies to further their website value.

Our small size also means that everyone knows what is happening and has a voice as to how we decide to approach a project and carry out the work. We also engage in paired programming as a part of our culture, especially when dealing with a complex problem involving differing skill sets.

We also have some flexibility in setting daily work hours. However, all staff must work from our Gastown office. Some remote work is possible after a minimum of 1 year once the person has established a strong relationship with the rest of the team.

Personal Characteristics we're looking for:

  • A growth mindset and positive attitude.
  • Be able to look at a problem, analyze it yourself, research the problem online, and iterate on your work or ask for help in order to arrive at a solution.
  • The personal discipline to be self-directed and work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to collaborate well with others -- to ask for help if you need it and be willing to respectfully give and take feedback.

Technical Skills we're looking for:

  • Familiarity with custom WordPress theme development -- the actual coding of a theme as we never use premium themes or visual composer plugins.
  • A good sense of visual style, user experience, typography, and aesthetic layouts.
  • Familiarity with HTML5, PHP, Javascript / jQuery, and CSS / SASS. Any experience with AJAX, and mySQL database queries are a bonus.
  • A basic understanding of GIT version control is nice to have.
  • Some experience in writing unit tests / automated browser testing is a plus.

Credentials we're looking for:

  • Some formal training in web development (degree, diploma, certificate).
  • Demonstration of your work such as a portfolio website, and/or verifiable project, and/or work experience.
  • Living in Canada and authorized to work in Canada: Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, or valid work visa are all accepted. For a strong candidate already living here, and with a valid work visa, we are open to acting as a sponsor employer for a PR.

We do have a minimum requirement for an applicant to have strong basic web development skills. However, after that Personal Characteristics count for a lot. For the right person we can ramp a new hire up into areas they may not have much previous experience.

This could be a good position for a junior who is strong in a few core skills as above and is looking for wider breadth of experience.

This role could also be a good fit for a more experienced person who has unmet creative needs, no longer wishes to work in a large organization, or just wants to join a small close-knit team of professionals and take personal responsibility for building out some interesting and diverse projects.

Applicant must be legally able to work in Canada and willing to commute to our office in downtown Vancouver. Salary range is $50,000 to $80,000 per year and is dependent upon experience. New hires will start and the base and professionals with 5 years experience and degree certification at the higher scale.
