Job Summary

What the Role is

Reporting to the COO Lawson, the Manager, Lawson Health & Safety is a key member of the research institute’s leadership team. The Manager contributes to the safety of staff and affiliates (students, volunteers, 3rd party paid) within LHSC and St. Joseph’s by ensuring regulatory requirements are met through the administration of the corporate safety program; the Lawson Biosafety and Radiation Safety Programs; Adverse Event and Workplace response and management system; and coordination of injury prevention programs. Working closely with area leadership, research staff and affiliates, Occupational Health and Safety at LHSC and St. Joseph’s and the Joint Health and Safety Committees (JHSC), this position is also responsible to ensure the appropriate follow-up, corrective action, and documentation of any adverse events and for the appropriate processing of Ministry of Labour visits and orders to Lawson and any JHSC recommendations. This position also facilitates compliance to the Public Health Agency of Canada and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission and guides these regulatory bodies throughout the research areas during inspections.

The Health and Safety Manager oversees and directs the daily activities of the Lawson Safety Specialists and Safety Team Project Associate by advising on complex issues; both procedural and systems, prioritizing work assignments, as well as developing and maintaining procedural guidelines. The Manager, Health and Safety also fulfils the roles of both Radiation Safety Officer as well as Biosafety Officer for Lawson, and reports to the Vice President, Research and Scientific Director, Lawson, in these two capacities.

This role is accountable for day-to-day department activities, including the management of human and material resources, day-to-day staffing and scheduling, development and support of a healthy workplace, risk and utilization measurements, and facilitation of improvement initiatives and change management, while operating within approved operational budgets and financial guidelines and controls. A major focus of the role is fostering effective working relationships and networks within the team/unit and with other teams across the organization.

What You Will Bring with You

  • Successful completion of a recognized baccalaureate degree program in a science, health science, or equivalent field of study. Related post-graduate education preferred
  • Registered Radiation Safety Officer and/or Biosafety Officer required, or obtain within one (1) year of starting in the role
  • Completion of a recognized Occupational Health and Safety certification program required
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years’ experience in progressively more responsible leadership roles in a healthcare environment, preferably in an acute care academic teaching hospital, with a focus on health and safety regulations within a research setting
  • Previous management experience in research health and safety preferred
  • Preference and consideration will be given to active members of the Canadian College of Health Leaders (CCHL) who have, or are in process of attaining the Canadian Health Executive (CHE) Select certification program
  • Ability to effectively work with diversity, appreciating that different opinions, backgrounds and characteristics can bring richness to the challenge at hand
  • Fluent and computer literate with computer systems such as email and Microsoft Office applications (MS Word, Excel & PowerPoint)
  • Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis
